Summer Escapes

Phoenix: the Valley of the Sun, is our home. Our great city has so much character, endless restaurants, and nearby hiking to take us into the beauty of the desert. The weather is predictable and we don’t have to deal with harsh winters! Dare I say I like to be hot?? Well, at least I’d rather be hot than cold! But lets be honest; even the most devout Phoenician needs a break from the summer heat. As the temperatures continue to climb, it’s a good idea to have a trip to cooler climates on the calendar.

For quick relief take a day trip up north. Prescott and Sedona will have you slightly cooler and the scenery there totally transports you. Flagstaff has beautiful summer weather in the 80’s. Check out the Arboretum, hike the Lava Tubes, and relax at one of the many restaurant patios.

For the best escape, however, pack your bags and head to San Diego for a long weekend! In less than 6 hours you can have your toes in the sand and take in beautiful ocean views. Each beach has a little different personality. La Jolla Cove Beach gives dramatic views as you walk along the bluffs. Grab a cocktail there at the historic La Valencia Hotel. Windansea Beach, tucked in Bird Rock, allows you to experience the full power of the Pacific. The huge waves are perfect for the surfer in your group. Walking the boardwalk that connects Pacific Beach and Mission Beach gives you access to multiple bars, restaurants, and lots of sunbathing real-estate. Get your heart pumping and hike Torrey Pines. The breathtaking views and interesting terrain are worth the sweat. As a bonus you can take a dip in the ocean when you get down.

For those of you with little ones, Mission Bay is the perfect place to spend the afternoon. The calm waters make it very approachable for timid kids to play. There is no fear of a wave taking them out, also there is no seaweed! Walk across to Belmont Park for the arcade, carousel, and old wooden roller coaster. If you are looking for some sand-free fun spend the day at Sea World, The San Diego Zoo or Legoland.

Whatever you do to get out of the heat make sure you have a blast doing it, and remember cooler temperature will return…eventually!
