Shane’s Inspirational Days at The Root Salon

Please! Loving your work makes life worth living!

Not a day goes by working in this industry that I don’t feel grateful for the connections I get to make.

First, when it comes to my clients, I like to ask many of my clients the same question: Do you like what you do?

I always enjoy all the different answers and insights. And I’m often surprised because it always seems like the grouchy-looking accountant is usually the nicest person when they’re in my chair. It’s hard to imagine a sweet person like that being feared during an audit!

And it works the other way around, too. The very outgoing theatrical person that always is on stage or in the spotlight is very quiet and reserved when they are not at their work.

And though I love this question, I’m often sad to hear that there are so many people today who really and truly don’t like their jobs. They dread going to work, feel underpaid and overworked. They don’t feel appreciated.

This is a good lesson for me to remember to be thankful and happy because I am one of the lucky ones. I love my job. I love what I do. I make people feel beautiful. I get the opportunity to play with someone’s hair — their number one accessory — every single day. The rad part is, that doing hair is just a byproduct of what I really like to do. And that’s to hang out and find a way to connect with everyone.

In all my years as a stylist, I’ve been blessed to work with super successful CEO’s all the way down to kids getting there first “real” haircut. And it’s SO rad. Everyday I come home or run to the break room to talk about the great experiences I’ve just shared. And I must admit that I only feel homesick when I see posts from my old clients back home! Their moments (both heartbreaking and joyful) happen without me and I miss getting to support them or relive these experiences when they are in my chair.

But it’s all worth it because I get to come to work here and I honestly work with the best and most talented staff. I love watching the talent of tomorrow grow right before my eyes. And, currently, at The Root Salon, we have two up-and-coming powerhouses. These two girls just have it! The questions they ask and their fearlessness to not give up, crack under pressure, and truly handle every situation that comes their way is astonishing. Add their passion to want to go forward with the humbled talent of our incredible cutting expert Dana, and our very own personal color educator LaurĂ©n and the sky is the limit!

Then there’s Brittany and GG…I get to work between these two talents everyday. I bounce formula ideas off them and watch what amazing work they do. They inspire me on a daily basis. And then there’s the always cool Jules. There are times I watch and listen to him talk about a certain color with his client and think I want that too! And I don’t even color my hair. But listening to him and the way he sees it will make you take the color plunge. There’s Oliver, a very talented and fast stylist, and his attention to detail is always on. He’s amazing!

So, do you love your job? Or did you just fall into it?

I really believe that life’s too short not to do what you love. My aunt told me to, “stick to old professions and you’ll never be out of work”. And we all know the phrase, “If you love what you do, you never work a day”. Now I’m not saying I don’t enjoy my days off but I’m always wanting to get back behind my chair. It’s where I like to be. Surrounded by talent that pushes me to do better.

We’d love to have you come in, too. If you’re interested in or already in this industry, come join us! If not, you can still be a part of this positive working energy by becoming one of our valued guests.
