One thing I want all hairdressers to know is that using photography can really make you a better hairdresser.

Of course, this little trick extends to our clients at home, too.

For hair professionals, consider focusing on getting some high-quality photos of your work. Plan to invest the money on a regular basis to hire a photographer. Often you can easily ask some clients and friends to be the models. This will document your body of work year over year and help build an impressive portfolio. Your portfolio can be your inspiration and reference point for future creations. And it’s a fun way to challenge your creativity in a new way to make artistic images.

It also lends an opportunity to view the hair as it is. With a more objective viewpoint, you can catch things you may not notice otherwise. After an honest, self-critique of your best work, you may aim for making cleaner lines or softer fringes, etc.

For clients who like to experiment with their own styles and creations, it’s easy to snap a few photos with your smartphone. Keep a log of photos so you can choose from styles you’ve achieved in the past when another event comes up. As it’s true with professionals, reviewing your photos will help you improve your styles over time.
