Just like schools, offices, and other shared spaces, The Root Salon is also a place that gets hit with little viruses from time to time!
Unfortunately for us, a nasty head cold was passed around our salon team this past week. Several stylists had to miss work. But so far, (knock on wood) It has skipped me! Even my husband who spends very little time in the salon came down with it so we know this little bug is tricky.
Along with bleach wiping my station, wearing clean gloves and using hand sanitizer, I have a little secret that rarely lets me down. The minute I feel that first sign of a cold (or I’m in the same room with a virus-filled sneeze), I reach for my trusted zinc lozenges. They taste terrible and can make my stomach a little queasy but it is well worth the sacrifice. I’ll trade slight discomfort for getting sick any day! I find that letting one dissolve in my mouth about three times a day can really do the trick.
Zinc has become a popular treatment for the common cold. Some studies have found that zinc lozenges may reduce the duration of cold, perhaps by as much as 50%, and may reduce the number of upper respiratory infections in children.
So be prepared, wash your hands, and keep a bottle of zinc handy.
