Let’s get spooky! We all love Halloween… but do we all know where it originates from? Over 2,000 years ago, the Celts came from what is now known as the United Kingdom. The Celts celebrated their New Years Eve on October 31st, this holiday is known as Samhain (pronounced sow-in). This day was known as the last day of summer and the beginning of the dark. In ancient belief it was associated with human death. The superstition was that the veil between the spirit realm and the living were thinned. The ritual of lighting bonfires and dressing up was originally intended to ward off evil spirits. Following the spooktastic day of Samhain, November 1st is known as All Saints Day; this day was created in the eighth century by Pope Gregory, the third. Over the centuries, this sacred ritual turned into what is now known as Halloween. A widely celebrated holiday filled with ticks and treats. May we honor the ancient people who brought this spooky holiday to fruition. Boo!
