“Our biggest fear is not dying, it’s being ourselves.” – Don Miguel Ruiz
Many years ago a book was recommended to me called The Four Agreements by Mexican author Don Miguel Ruiz. Until this point I really didn’t care for “self help” books but the book was thin and looked like it wouldn’t take long to read, so I went for it. Once I began reading, I did not stop and read that whole book that afternoon. The book is based off the Toltecs belief of freedom from self-limiting beliefs that may cause suffering in a person’s life. The Toltecs are an indigenous Mexican culture of great warriors and artists that existed between the 10th and mid-12th centuries. Ruiz takes this belief system and breaks it down to four parts, explaining how everything a person does is an agreement with oneself. The question becomes are the agreements true to the person or to a belief system based off all the years of being “domesticated?”
The Four Agreements are –
- Be Impeccable With Your Word
- Don’t Take Anything Personally
- Don’t Make Assumptions
- Always do your best
Now, I could explain each agreement but that would take the fun out of you reading The Four Agreements. I know, the agreements seem all too basic but I promise Ruiz has written the book in a way that will blow your mind. Happy Reading!
