For those of you who know me, you know that I love to read! I love books, all types of books and all types of stories. But did you know that reading is good for your mental health? And since we’re all about health and beauty at The Root Salon, I want to inspire all of us to pick up a book this summer.
Even as far back as the early 1900’s they knew that reading was good for you. In a 1905 essay “On Reading” Marcel Proust says: “With books there is no forced sociability. If we pass the evening with those friends-books-it’s because we really want to. When we leave them, we do so with regret and, when we have left them, there are none of those thoughts that spoil friendship: ‘What did they think of us?’-‘Did we make a mistake and say something tactless?’-‘Did they like us?’-nor is there the anxiety of being forgotten because of the displacement by someone else.”
Reading has been shown to put our brains into a pleasurable trance-like state, similar to meditation — and it brings the same health benefits of deep relaxation and inner calm. It also helps you be a better conversationalist, a better speller, a better writer, and just an all around better person (wink, wink). Reading a few pages a night will help you get to sleep better than watching TV in bed.
I keep a book journal or a “book-book” as my mom called it when I was little. I write down the book title, author, how many pages it is, and when I started it and when I finished it. I also rate it between 1 and 4 stars. This helps me see how many books I’ve read per year, and it’s fun to go back to see all that I’ve tracked. The most I read one year was 42 books! I also likes the app Goodreads, it’s a great way to keep track of the books you read or keep track of the ones you want to read (my to-read list is up to 200).
