The Root Salon team hard at work at Culture Camp.

A couple of months ago, we did something that was a long time in the making. We all came together and participated in our first annual Root Salon “Culture Camp”. It was fun and a lot of hard work all at the same time.

I have been working for about four years now with my mentor, Chris Murphy from MotivePoint based in Austin, TX. He is a fellow salon owner with three locations. He took me under his wing and I have never looked back. When Chris says, “jump” I ask, “How high?”!

He believes in a management theory that allows for a business’s cultural development to be driven by all — from the newest team member to the owners. One of his favorite sayings is, “If you don’t define your culture, someone else will.

Here at The Root Salon our culture has definitely been defined both in the salon and on-line. However, it has been more of a feeling rather than a definition “in writing”. At Chris’s company they shut down the entire business twice a year to redefine and articulate the culture of his entire team.

I knew we were overdue for the same experience. With Chris as our special guest and guide, we reserved a conference room at the downtown Sheraton. We closed the salon for the day and started first thing in the morning. The day was filled with team building and sharing exercises. We brought in a yummy lunch and snacks. Chris led us to our ultimate goal: defining our culture together from within. Moving forward as a team we will grow, coach, and hire based on what we defined.

Where culture is born!

Where culture is born!

In the coming months we will roll out blogs that let you know who we really are from the inside out. You will get an in-depth look at who we are as a company and team.

To get you started this is what we came up with:

Our Purpose

Making a connection with our community through beauty.

Our Values

Relationships – We believe that relationships are the foundation for building bonds that lead to excellent customer care and seamless teamwork.

Creativity – We believe creativity is allowing freedom for our stylists to explore artistic avenues. We achieve this through openness and exercising the ability of expression by pushing the boundaries.

Fun – We believe fun should be an enjoyable salon experience from start to finish, between stylist and client, and among the entire salon team.

Learning – We believe learning is the constant evolution of team growth and improvement. Our environment is collaborative and forward-thinking.

Humor – We believe humor is keeping the salon in a state of light-heartedness, by not taking ourselves as seriously as we take our work.

Hard Work – We believe that hard work is coming into the salon prepared and being driven to go the extra mile every day.

Happiness – We believe happiness is a balance of well-being in our personal lives and our profession, while bringing joy to our guests.

Respect – We believe respect is valuing our guests and our colleagues, while recognizing and appreciating individual personalities.

Like I mentioned, there will be more to come on these topics!
