The Root Salon is so proud to announce that our Jillian has been selected to be a part of the Aveda team at New York Fashion Week! Here’s what she has to say about getting ready for her dream come true!

Being a former athlete for the majority of my life has definitely given me a leg up on just how important preparation is for an event. It doesn’t matter what that event is in one’s life, preparation is KEY.

Right now, I am in the midst of preparing for something that is completely foreign to me. Something I’ve never done before but have always DREAMED of doing. Just writing this is giving me goose bumps!

This is it. It’s here. I’m going to New York Fashion Week.

Preparing for one of the biggest moments in my life has been quite a lot of work. First thing was first, I flew to Los Angeles to have an intense, two-day, hands-on training with the well-known and influential hair artist, Jon Reyman. This take-no-prisoners training was essential in my preparation as it gave me some insight as to what I’m up against. And it’s so much more involved than just styling hair. The baseline was to practice teamwork, humility, pressure, timing, understanding models and proper etiquette all while representing such a global company like Aveda. These factors are crucial to understand while trying to reach a common goal with so many other moving parts going on around you.

The styling objectives were also invaluable. We were taught to expand the eye with perspective, intention, balance and timing. The importance of proper tools, the connection between products and end result, styling skills to manage any hair type and pliability of the hair. The most important thing to come from these 48 hours in LaLa land were the importance of teamwork. Nothing will be accomplished without it. Especially on this grand of a scale.

In terms of my own day-to-day preparation, I’m being mindful of the most basic ways to help my body and mind. I’m eating properly, exercising, getting 8 hours of sleep a night, staying hydrated and keeping an open and optimistic frame of mind. I’m setting my intentions now before I ever step foot in NYC. I’m being mindful to not overthink anything. I’m trusting that all the hard work I’ve put in up until this week, September 8-15th 2016, has and will pay off.

I’m ready! I’m going to go work hard and try to have a blast at living out a dream come true!
