With Father’s Day around the corner, The Root Salon team wants to recognize the great dads out there. Here are our stories about the awesome dads we know…

My dad’s name is Allan Rieken and he’s pretty awesome. He is a woodworker by trade, so growing up, my sister, brother, and I always had furniture in our rooms made by him. First, just twin beds, then twin bunk beds. Then, for a little while, we all slept in one room and he made triple high bunk beds! My mom still has all those beds in storage so I’ll be using them for my own kids some day. The dresser that’s in our guest room at my current home is the first piece of furniture my dad made for me.

He also has a great dry, sarcastic sense of humor. Getting text messages from him is pretty funny, he’s really into emojis right now and will use totally random ones as his reply. (Usually you have text him or call him multiple times to get a straight answer.) He loves to play Scrabble, whenever we go over for dinner we usually pair into couples and play a game before going home. (It’s rare when he doesn’t win.)

He’s taught me to be a good person and to have fun and that’s the best part. I will always come to him for advice before any big decision because I know he will tell it to me straight.

He still does amazing woodworking, mostly custom cabinetry and entertainment centers. But he really can build anything — he’s working on a retirement house for him and my stepmom in the Prescott now. But if you need a good carpenter check AR Woodworking. Happy Father’s Day Dad!
