Exercise. Meditation. Self care. Eating right. Staying grateful.
This is the short list for many of us who want to be proactive about strategically creating pathways to happiness in our daily lives.
Forgive my negativity, but sometimes that list above seems like a list of daily chores! Where’s the fun? The joy? Does any of that make me smile?
A few years ago, I was listening to a podcast called “Ologies” with Alie Ward in which she interviews experts and scientists about their work, knowledge, and discoveries.
In one memorable episode, she interviewed a Gelotologist. Gelotology is the study of laughter! This (surprisingly serious and sober) research scientist explained that his data reveals that people who laugh more often are vastly more likely to feel an overall sense of happiness and satisfaction with their lives. He went on to explain that he strategically takes 5-10 minutes per day to watch videos on YouTube that make him laugh.
Bingo! This doesn’t sound like a chore at all!
Since I learned about this simple and joyful habit, I remember to purposely seek humor if I’m feeling a little low. It’s amazing what a little laughter can do. Now it’s become one of my favorite life management tools.
Give it a try!
