This blog isn’t about trends or what’s hot in fashion.
It’s about respect, morals and beliefs.
As I’m ending 2017, I’ve had a chance to reflect on my decisions so far in life. In today’s world, it seems that everything and anything goes but that shouldn’t mean we toss aside our individual sense of right and wrong.
Not too long ago, I was in a professional role in which I felt like I had to conform to other peoples’ views of how I should look and behave at work. I never really cared about pleasing others to such a degree in the past, but this job was everything to me (or so I thought). Unfortunately, I was surrounded by a group of people who placed a higher value on vanity than kindness and hard work. To make matters worse, the people I worked with took joy in others’ suffering or struggles.
There was one coworker who was disrespected almost daily. I’m ashamed to say that even though she was hassled by the group until her face would turn red with embarrassment, I never spoke up. I’m truly sorry for not standing by her side and remaining silent. Looking back, I can see that the longer I stayed with this company the more I lost myself and compromised my beliefs.
This job with its “great reputation” fogged my judgement. I let the most important person in my life down: myself. I learned that my career isn’t more important than being proud of who I am. Luckily, I found a new career that I felt passionate about and though I was afraid, I decided to quit.
I can finally say it was the best thing I could have done for myself. You never truly know how toxic a place is until you leave.
I’m sharing this because I want everyone to look ahead in 2018 and remember that no matter how focused or passionate you are about achieving your goals you should never feel pressured about lowering your standards or compromising your integrity.
Follow your heart, it will always lead you down the right path!
