Limits. Boundaries. Two words that are not my personal favorite.
Especially when applying them to fashion.
Fashion, to me, should be limitless, without boundaries. In life I’m drawn to to those who possess this same outlook on an industry that allows one to portray themselves however they choose. What a liberating idea…fashion is a movement of individualism. A way for one to project how they feel, who they are or what inspires them, to the world.
And I’m not talking about just clothes.
I’m meaning fashion on a whole; hair, makeup, clothing, accessories, shoes, even attitude. Fashion should be fun and daring, classic and refined, imaginative and unspeakable, historical and modern, fierce but inviting. The concept of wearable art should truly embody the idea that anything is possible. A movement where confidence is king, and the rest will just follow.
To me, there are several people who could wear the crown of the fashion empire, but none are as deserving as the queen herself, Rihanna. She is my fashion inspiration for so many reasons, but the most important of them all, she remains true to herself. She answers to no one when it comes to how the world perceives her, because she does what she wants.
Love her or hate her, she makes no mistakes when walking out of her house in the morning, as there are mistakes to be made when loving yourself and life. She’s a true island girl who has a beautiful voice and the entire world has recognized that. Whether she’s dressed goth for the VMA’s, feminine for a date, sophisticated for a charity benefit, street for night on the town with her girls, sexy for a photo shoot or in a see-through sequin dress for the Icon of the Year award, she can do no wrong.
She too believes that fashion is both limitless and without boundaries, and chooses to express who she is on the world stage for all to see. Like it or not, she is who she is and that’s why Rihanna inspires me!
