Recently, with the help of expert colorist, Lauren Hart, I went from blonde to brunette in a matter of 6 hours.
She’s used to my flip-flopping. I went from black (I was a punky teenager in the 1990’s) to burgundy to brunette. I stayed with the dark side for over ten years. Then, a few years ago, I unceremoniously announced my wish to become blonde.
Lauren, my dear friend and expert hair stylist, has gently guided my hair through each transition. My hair not only survived but maintained a beautiful shine throughout.
I loved being a blonde but I always felt it was a departure from my “true self”. After mentioning this feeling to my husband a few times, he remarked, “Honey, you’re really pretty as a blonde. But you’re just so smokin’ hot as a brunette.”
At my next appointment, I made yet another request for a dramatic hair color change.
Going from black to blonde and every color in between has been a journey. And here are a few things I learned along the way…
Stay with one professional. The key to maintaining the hair’s integrity throughout such dramatic changes is to find yourself a fantastic hair colorist and stick with her (or him). I’ve been with Lauren Hart for 15 years. She knows my hair. She knows its history, its behavior, and can predict how it will react to any treatment.

My hair stayed soft to the touch during every single step of all these processes. This is because I followed every single order Lauren Hart gave me. Professional product, regular trims…it all worked. At this point, I’d stand on my head if she told me to.
Be prepared for feedback. Some people like me as a blonde. Some as a brunette. Some as a red-head. People are going to have opinions. Remember that just because they prefer a certain color doesn’t mean you ever looked bad. Trust me, its impossible to look bad with an expert colorist on your side.
Be open to a cut. With dramatic changes to hair color, your ends can take a beating. Be liberal with frequent trims and consider a bob for a fresh start…especially if a cut is recommended.
Go with your gut. As mentioned, people will share their preference. Be sure to keep asking yourself one question: When do I feel prettiest? Evidently, I feel prettiest when my husband describes me a “smokin’ hot”. Hey, whatever works, right?
Be kind to your hair. Comb gently. Keep metal barrettes and clips out of your hair (they cause breakage). Air dry if possible. And, for the love of all hings beautiful, get yourself some good product.
Aching for a big change? Go to the Root Salon. Lauren Hart has passed on her wealth of knowledge to her entire staff. Take it from me, nobody does it better.
