Shampooing is something every person who has a decent sense of hygiene must do. Whether it’s once a week or every day, we all spend time lathering our locks.
Surprisingly, most of us aren’t shampooing properly!
Here are a few tips to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your shampoo.First thing’s first: Find the right shampoo. This means assessing the type of hair you have (curly, straight, wavy, fine, thick, etc.) then purchasing the appropriate product.
I often hear clients mention that they choose a shampoo because they love the smell. Not good! Having nice-smelling hair is has its merits — but if it’s the wrong product, your hair won’t look its best. If you aren’t quite sure what product is right for you, talk to your Root Salon stylist (who else?) so they can recommend a shampoo system that’s right for you.
Okay, so now that you’ve got the right shampoo, follow these steps:
1. Lather up.
Wet your hair thoroughly and only use a couple pumps of shampoo. The average amount of product should be the size of a quarter — professional product is more concentrated so a little goes a long way. Start at the scalp and rub thoroughly with you fingertips (never, ever, ever use your fingernails!) then work the lather through the ends.
2. Go for round two.
If it’s been a couple of days since your last shampoo feel free to shampoo twice. Rinse, then repeat step one.
3. Treat yourself.
Here at The Root Salon we love to treat our clients to the wonderful Alfaparf Illuminating essential oils. I personally love this product because it creates noticeably shinier hair. After you’ve rinsed out the shampoo, make sure you squeeze as much water out of your hair as possible. Then sprinkle the product from ends to the top of the head. Work the product into the hair so that a small amount of lather starts to form. Leave the product in for 3-5 minutes then rinse. Please note that you don’t have to do this every single time you shampoo your hair — about once or twice a week should do the trick.
4. Get in prime condition.
Conditioner can be tricky business. Same rules apply here: Talk to your Root Salon stylist to ensure that the conditioner you are you using is appropriate for you hair type (too heavy on fine hair will cause a dull, flat look…too light on thick hair and those strands will dry out). Start by applying the conditioner on the ends then work it to the top, creating an even distribution throughout. Let it soak in for another 3-5 minutes. When rinsing, and make sure you rinse thoroughly — it should feel silky, not slimy.
That’s it! A few rounds of this and you’ll soon feel like you were born with a whole new head of hair!
