I often have women sit in my chair, complaining about their “mom hair”.
Before becoming a mom, I didn’t really get it. And now, as a mother, I still don’t get it. I promise I’m saying this with all the empathy in the world! But because I’m a mom and I like my hair, maybe I can help other moms get to this place.
First, I firmly believe you should wear your hair however you want! BUT (and here’s the catch) it’s important to choose wisely. I know first-hand that getting ready in the morning with two boys (1 and 4 years old) is no walk in the park. I always plan on getting up early and having this peaceful morning filled with my DVD workout, coffee, and a shower, with no one screaming at me banging on the shower door. Ha! But it’s very rare that I actually wake up before the baby. He beats my alarm literally every day.
With that being said, its super important to me to have a hair and makeup routine that takes minimal time. This is how I’ve achieved satisfaction with my “mom hair”. I chose to cut my hair in a bob. I pretty much always have. It’s what I love. So I don’t classify it as mom hair. But it is super easy for me to style, and I love the way it frames my face.
On that note, I recommend choosing a hairstyle that you KNOW works. Something similar to what you’ve had before so you can have realistic expectations for the prep time. Think about a style you had that worked best for your hair type and texture. We can help you if you feel your favorite (and simple) style is now a little outdated. Rely on us to determine how to update the cut to something more current without adding too much effort to your styling process.
Another little “cheat” is that dry shampoo and texture sprays have become my new best friend. I can stretch a shampoo blow dry all week if I need to. Throw a braid in, or pull it up in that fun messy top knot, and you’re good to go. Short to mid length hair styles are super trendy right now, and would be perfect for anyone including moms!
When it comes to make up, I have my days where I get to take extra time and really do it up, but for the most part, I just wear foundation, blush, bronzer, and mascara. And I usually do that at my kitchen table while my boys are eating breakfast. It’s just what works best for me. A friend of mine who has a little girl bought her play (fake) makeup with brushes and a mirror so they get to “put on makeup” together. Whatever it takes!
Remember you became a mother in addition to the amazing person you already were. You don’t need to reinvent yourself to be an awesome mom. With our help, you won’t have to lose your style, either! You’re still you and it’s important to still have your identity.
Wear what makes you feel good, do things that make you feel good. In turn you will be a much better mother and person all around!
