What’s not to love about summer? Longer days, summer vacation, family activities, warm weather, lots of water parks and swimming! We are all reaching for the SPF 70 before we do any of these activities because we all know how damaging the sun can be for your skin. But what about your hair?
Here are some tips:
Start the summer with a fresh haircut. As hair grows out, split ends continue to split up the hair shaft so why not get rid of those dead ends, start fresh and keep your hair in good healthy condition?
Just as we put sunscreen on our face and body our hair should be no different. Using products with UV protection helps maintain our hair’s moisture even in our 100+ degree weather. Two of my personal favorite products to use is Aveda’s sun care protective hair veil and Alfaparf Milano’s leave in nutritive detangling fluid. For added protection, consider wearing a hot or hair scarf if you’ll be under the rays for an extended amount of time.
Don’t forget to keep your hair moisturized! Summer heat tends to strip moisture away and shampooing more often makes it worse. Try to shampoo every other day and deep condition with a hair mask or even a hot oil treatment.
Reduce any heat styling tools and give your hair a break. Consider embracing your natural hair a few days a week. But if that’s a hard no, be sure to always apply a heat protectant before styling your hair.
When swimming try to cover your hair with a swim cap or you can tie your hair up and try to avoid any contact from the water. A quick rinse before and after is also great. Apply and reapply a leave in treatment after rinsing off and before getting back into the water. You can also use a clarifying shampoo after swimming to remove chlorine and build up from swimming. Clarifying can dry out your hair so follow up with a moisturizing conditioner and or leave in treatment.
Try a few of these tips this summer and we promise you’ll notice a difference!
