While talking to your Root Salon stylist or your friends about thinning brittle hair, some conversation may have come up about supplement known as “Biotin.” Experts say it is a B complex of vitamins (also known as vitamin H) that are important in metabolism, helping your body to process energy and transporting carbon dioxide from your body’s cells.
The claim is that the supplement can help grow healthier and stronger hair, skin and nails. It has sent hundreds of women to the vitamin aisle of their favorite health food store looking for these beauty benefits.
But is Biotin really the answer?
Experts are arguing that it isn’t totally clear what role biotin plays. We have read that biotin deficiencies are rare and low levels may result in brittle nails and hair loss. However, many experts agree that taking the vitamin does improve the keratin infrastructure (a basic protein that makes up hair, skin and nails).
Furthermore, some experts believe that taking biotin supplements may actually halt the onset of brittle hair and nails and even help to reverse it.
We say do your research and better yet, talk to your doctor about it before you start popping this popular pill.
