To my fellow redheads, I’ve got some tips for maintaining a vibrant red hair color!
As many of you know I am one of the redheads of The Root Salon and let me reassure you, it’s a common problem for red to fade. Especially with the harsh hard water and chlorine in our water systems here in AZ. But I’ve been able to keep my color vibrant. Even when I’m due for my next color appointment, my hair color is still bright.
Here are some ways I keep my hair color fresh!
1.) I commit to an appointment every 4-6 weeks! I have done that for 5 years now. The color is cumulative so the fact I have been consistent for 5+ years has helped me maintain this color. Since there’s no avoiding red color fading, I rely on existing layers of color to “back up” the most recent color treatment.
2.) To HELP the fading, I use a great sulfate free and sodium free shampoo and conditioner. I prefer Alfaparf color protection. I also don’t wash my hair everyday. This may not work for everyone but I typically wash every 3-4 days and it certainly helps too keep my color lasting longer!
3.) I avoid the sun. I do have very fair skin so this really isn’t and issue for me.
4.) I stay out of the pool. Or, at the very least, I don’t dunk my head under water. Chlorine and even salt water pools will tug at that hair color and cause it to fade faster.
