Many presume that being a hairstylist is “just a job.” I know my own parents weren’t exactly thrilled at the idea of their youngest becoming a hairdresser when I was 18 years old!
All I have to say to the naysayers is, unless you’ve walked a mile in a hairdressers shoes, please reconsider your harsh opinions.
I’ve had many a jobs in my life and being a stylist takes the cake on being the most difficult. It’s a good thing I LOVE it! I believe hairdressers are the most downright, hardest working people on planet earth — especially those who work in busy salons like The Root Salon.
First, we’re on our feet from the moment we step out of bed, until the moment we get back into bed for a night’s rest. Even while color is processing, stylists are busy doing other things like writing profiles, stocking product, or doing laundry. We don’t sit down. Ever. I’m upright and engaged for an entire 8-9 hour work day.
Second, we are pretty darn GREAT at multi-tasking, which isn’t easy. Between shampooing clients, I’m sweeping hair, answering phones, getting a lunch order together, booking appointments, throwing wet towels in the wash, mixing color, and restocking the shelves. Then it’s back to the shampoo bowl, all while keeping track of the amount of time your highlights have been in foils on top off your head! That’s pretty impressive considering I have not sat down yet (see first example).
Third, I’m a talker. Love to talk. Love everything about talking…the sound of your voice, the sound of mine, the laughs, the cries…I love it all. Communication is GREAT! However, talking all day for a living, as crazy as it sounds, is downright exhausting! We hairdressers work in “lively” environments, meaning high energy all around. Whether it’s the music playing, the 5 conversations going on between clients and stylists, or the non-stop phones ringing, it’s all about communication, communication, communication. It’s no wonder I like tea with honey so much….soothes my vocal cords!
Fourth and finally, never at any other job have I ever had to be on my “A” game 100% of the time. We at The Root Salon are hyper vigilant in watching our color clients process juuuuuust right. I’ll never forget the day I obsessively sifted through the trash can to find a disposed tube of hair color to ensure the color I mixed was the correct one! It was the accurate color and everything turned out beautifully but it only takes one scare to remind you that this job requires your full attention all the time.
As hectic as this sounds, rest assured that I LOVE every minute of it! With The Root Salon as my training ground, I’m learning to be an elite stylist from the very best. It’s not an easy road and it’s not for the faint of heart.
That’s why it’s a path for those of us who truly love what we do; the good, the bad and the grueling!

As one of the above mentioned parents, am so happy you have found your turf (still wish you would buy better shoes so your feet and back don’t crumble at some point!)and that you love it! You even look pretty, squatting and cleaning up,in your picture. Keep up the great job and so glad you are in an environment that keeps the “juices” flowing!!!!
