With the popular use of flat irons to create straight hair styles, we thought we would share a bit of professional advice on the proper use of this handy tool.
Step One: Get the right flat iron.
Here at The Root Salon, we prefer a flat iron that has a ceramic plate and an adjustable temperature control. Ceramic plates provide an even heat surface compared to metal, and have proven to be better for the health of your hair. An adjustable temperature control will allow you to use just the right amount of heat for your specific hair texture. Please be sure to read the packaging and instruction manual of your flat iron to set it at the appropriate temperature.
Step Two: Prepare properly.
Make sure that you dry your hair completely before you hit it with a flat iron. Leaving moisture inside the hair shaft will lead to a “steaming” effect and is much more damaging to the structure of the hair. Here in the salon, we make sure your hair is freshly cleansed and conditioned using the best products for your hair type before styling. We do not recommend applying hair spray or silicone products to your hair before using your flat iron. We do, however, suggest that use a good thermal shielding product. Our favorite is Alfaparf’s Semi Di Lino Illuminating Thermal Protector. Spray it evenly throughout the hair and let it dry. It has a unique ability to shield the hair from the heat and preserve the hair fiber during heat styling. (You can use it when you use your curling iron, too.)
Step Three: Take it one section at a time.
Your hair section should be comparable with the size (length and width) of your flat iron. So, if the plates of your flat iron are two inches wide and five inches long, work with a section of hair with the same measurements. Did you know that this is also a good rule of thumb to follow for the size of sections for drying your hair, as well? Your section should match the size of your brush.
Step Four: Brush it out.
When you have finished styling your beautifully smooth mane, brush through the head with a flat boar bristle brush. To keep your style looking sleek, we like to apply a smoothing serum now. One of our recent favorites is the newest serum from hair color guru, Beth Minardi. Minardi’s “Glisten” Color Reflecting Gloss, offers up a luxurious blend of botanical extracts that maximize glossy smoothness and vibrant color reflection so hair color stays brilliant. As you know, we are all about great hair color at The Root Salon!
Some things to remember…
High heat styling can be VERY damaging to the integrity of the hair. We do not recommend flat iron styling on a daily basis. With the right technique and the right products, you should be able to get several days wear from your silky, smooth ‘do.
Lastly, you know the whole team here at The Root Salon is highly skilled at achieving any style you want to wear. Appointments are available for shampoo and styling of any kind. You can even book online!
…Or, as always, our customer care team is here to take your call, answer your questions and get you that appointment that works for you!
