A common question I’m asked while working behind my chair is, “How do you keep your color so vibrant and fresh?” (If you don’t know, I am a fiery red head!)
Well, I’m happy to answer with a few crucial tips.
I make the time for consistent color appointments.
Although I am a stylist at The Root Salon and it seems like it would be easy to just color my hair whenever I want, it actually takes some work to commit to a refresh every 4-6 weeks. I completely empathize with my clients on this one — it’s tough to fit in regular color maintenance with a busy schedule! I admit that due to my busy days behind the chair, I’m known to push it to 6 weeks in a pinch.
For all you color clients out there, we should have a hair color appointment every 4 weeks to keep it looking its best! Especially if you choose a vibrant color like mine. And, I’d just like to add, it’s totally worth it — I love being a vibrant red head and absolutely recommend this look!
I invest in my hair color and the product that goes with it.
A hair color appointment is just the first step in keeping a vibrant color fresh. For the weeks between my coloring appointments, I am religious about using great home care products. I know it may seem like an added expense to purchase great products, but if you are committing time and money to fabulous color upkeep, why not support this investment by utilizing product that we guarantee will help?
My favorite (and what I find helps the most) is our sulfate-free and sodium-free color protection line by Alfaparf Milano. The line came out about 2 years ago and I’ve been in love with it’s ability to ward off fading ever since.
I have patience for the process.

This color was a journey, not a destination. When I started coloring my hair, I went from blonde to brunette to blonde-ish to red (sound familiar?). When you change your hair color, it’s important to remember that hair color is cumulative. The more often and longer you do it, the better the hair holds the color.
With my bright red color, it took about 6 months of coloring every 3 weeks before I noticed the serious fading subsided. I took a deep breath, committed to the corrective process, and remained patient with the routine. Today, even when I know its faded, the rest of the world doesn’t seem to notice at all. In fact, I get compliments on my fabulous color the day before I’m due for an appointment!
I understand how to fight the fade.
No matter what hair color you choose, you are prone to color fadage. Reds, however, are the most prone to this challenge. This color protection line I mentioned above consists of shampoo, conditioner, special treatment vials and styling products. I find that by using this line and making the time commitment to my regular coloring appointments, I never have to worry about fading.
In fact I’m too busy receiving compliments on my color to even think about it. Even if it’s been 4 weeks, I just smile, say, “thanks,” and recommend my color maintenance system!
